HK-91 magazine questions

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has any info/experience with steel/aluminum/nylon HK-91 magazines?

I recently purchased a HK91 (not a clone) and I see a myriad of mags out there for sale. Is one type better than another? Living in S. FL I was leanning towards Thermold nylon mags, but beofre I invest in 10 magazines I was hoping to tap into the volume of experience here at GIM...

Thanks!

The aluminum military surplus mags are about as good (and cheap) as they get. They hold up as well as the steel ones and are lighter weight.

These are $2.99 each from Copes...

+1 on the aluminum mags. You have to love German military surplus magazines for $1.90 each!

The "used surplus" mags are in great shape.

I have 2 factory steel mags, 4 aluminum mags and 2 of the plastic and all three styles feed as advertised.

Yes you are correct they all feed very well.

just do not drop the aluminum ones when they are loaded they may become unserviceable........

I dropped a 20 rd mag with 18 in it off my reloading bench ( 36 inchs to the floor ) .... & it was trashed ...I saved the spring & the foller (sp) but the mag body was junked ......

If you can get steel at a cheap or low cost price ....buy steel

I would have to agree that the aluminum would be less desirable in the extreme of combat, and your post does remind me that I could use about a dozen more magazines.

I might get a mix of steel and the thermold just for the halibut.

Aluminum mags are designed for combat use and are as suitable as anything else. All mags are considered to be disposable. If they break, toss them. And if you ever have to carry a mess of them around you will appreciate the lighter weight.

I have German army issue aluminum FN-FAL mags...M-16 mags are aluminum...and we are still using them in combat after 40 some-odd years.

If you can buy good condition aluminum G-3 mags for $1.90 apiece...HELL, buy a hundred of them suckers. :coolbeer:

The price is $1.50 per mag if you get a hundred from the site I posted.

The aluminum mags are a little less than half the weight of their steel counterparts. 140 grams aluminum vs. 260 grams steel.

One can buy two M1As for what the 91 costs these days, the weak link with the 91 is the cheesy cocking "handle" and of course long distance accuracy.

The Saiga may be the best of field but I know of noone who's attempted destructive testing so far. In the three examples I've tested, the 18" delivered reliable sub minute accuracy.

These quality HK mags have been available very cheaply for years, and the supply doesn't seem to be drying up. There are also steel 30-rounders that are a bit harder to find, but work similarly well.

If he has a real HK 91, the charging handle is nothing to worry about and neither is the accuracy. The HK 91 is more reliable than the M1A (which is extremely reliable to begin with) and it's accuracy while not as good is still a very effective weapon at 500 yards.

For my arsenal I've opted for G3's (century "centurion" clones not real HK 91's) and an M1A, likely to add a second M1A to cover my .308 bases.

As for magazines the aluminum surplus mags are the way to go. As someone posted, 1.50 each. I bought mine 2 years ago for 80 cents each delivered (I bought 400 of them to get that price) and they are all factory stamped HK or their contract plant FMP. All run 100%. I've dropped several and not had any that became "trashed" because of it. As with any magazine, drop it right and it's game over.

Good chocie with the HK91, even if it is pricey. It will serve you well. besides the money save with cheap G3 mags vs the M1A mags covers the gap, lol. Best price I can find factory USGI mags for the M1A / M14 is about 22 bucks each. Thats pretty steep for 20 round mags for a military issue weapon.

Do yourself a favor, buy a couple dozen surplus G3 magazines NOW. Once McBama gets into office they'll be back up to 10 bucks+ in a month.

I paid about $2k for this gun, in good/verygood condition, with 6 mags and spare forearm grip. The cocking handle is a bit small, yes, and I am replacing it with an aftermarket handle that is twice as long. As far as accuracy... Well, firing PRVI Partisan 7.62, off a sandbag, 200 meters, iron sights, I had groups of about 6".
I think with better ammo and a scope that I could knock and inch or two off that group. Maybe more if I also used a full rifle rest. But, for a HK battle rifle, given thier reliability, I am happy with the gun.
